English Poetry of the Early Seventeenth Century

11:15-12:05 MWF (30) 3 cr.

This course is designed to enable students to read, understand, and appreciate the poetry of Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, Crashaw, Jonson, Herrick, and Marvell while at the same time introducing them to the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts that contribute to that poetry. To that end, we will identify and practice strategies for reading and writing about early seventeenth century English poetry in the context of daily class discussions and in the two required essays, the midterm and final exams, and a number of informal, one-page "first pass" exercises. Attendance is required and daily participation strongly encouraged.
