Introduction to Criticism

9:30a-10:45a TR (30) 3 cr.

PREREQUISITE: COMPLETION OF L202 WITH A GRADE OF C- OR BETTER. THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WILL STRICTLY ENFORCE THIS PREREQUISITE.

This course will address a set of theoretical and practical questions that lie at the heart of contemporary literary and cultural studies--questions that have informed students' own study of literature. How does the sort of work we do in English courses bear on the wider values of the society in which we find ourselves? How should that work bear on our personal lives? And just what sort of work do we do in English courses, anyway? What is the nature of the attention we pay literary texts? How has reading in this way come to matter so much-to each of us and to our culture? What idea of history and the past informs literary study? Students will probably be asked to write two 5-7 page essays, and to take two exams.
