Topics in Art History

This course surveys American painting, sculpture, photography, design, and
commercial art from the urban realism of the "Ash Can" School to the
emergence of Pop in the early 1960s.  Topics include the early
avant-garde; the cult of the machine; New York dada; the expressionist
landscape, the Harlem Renaissance; regionalist painting and the American
heartland; public art and cultural politics; surrealism, American style;
abstract expressionism and the cult of masculinity; the nuclear sublime;
pop art and consumer culture.  Class work includes assigned readings,
quizzes, and research projects.
