Problems in 19th and 20th Century European Art

This seminar will explore aspects of the Symbolist Movement from a broad
international perspective and in terms of a variety of media, including
sculpture and photography. The first third of the semester will be spent
gaining a broad overview of the movement through reading and discussing
key Symbolist texts, while the remaining of the semester will be spent
investigating and reporting on specific aspects of Symbolism. This will
be a working seminar, gathering material for a proposed book on Symbolism,
in which student contributions will be duly acknowledged. Individual
research projects will be designed in consultation with Dr. Facos, and
presented as 20-minute, conference style reports. Students will learn
about the challenges of assembling such a project and about new research
techniques.
