Topic: From the Middle Ages to the Present.  This course will focus on
the rich and diverse tradition of the Italian short story. We will
analyze the nature and transformation of this genre throughout the
centuries. Special attention will be paid to thematic as well as
formal issues in the novellas of, among others, Boccaccio,
Machiavelli, Verga, Pirandello and Calvino. Students will be expected
to write two short essays, give an oral presentation, and write a
final paper. The class will be conducted in Italian. A reader will be
available.
