G625: Die Jugend und Simplicissimus 1896-1926: Thirty Years of
German Popular Culture.

This colloquium will be devoted to an exploration of German popular
culture at the beginning of the twentieth century. Our focus will be
on two of the major popular journals of the period, with an emphasis
on the intersection of popular literature, art, advertisements,
history and politics in individual issues and particular Jahrgnge.
Each member of the colloquium will select a given year (or portion of
a year) of one of these two periodicals for closer analysis. It is
to be expected that some years will be of partiular interest: 1900,
1905, 1910, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1922, 1924, but any
year should yield interesting results. Students will be required both
to make an oral presentation of their research in progress and to
write a term paper on the period of the journal they have chosen.
