Spanish American Romanticism and Realism
A general overview of nineteenth-century prose and poetry exclusive
of modernismo with an emphasis on independence; the introduction of
European Romanticism; literatura gauchesca; Positivism; Realism and
Naturalism.
Readings to include Heredia, Avellaneda, Sarmiento, Echeverría,
Hernández, Palma, Zorrilla de San Martín, Blest Gana, Cambaceres,
Quiroga.
Three short papers due at five-week intervals; no exams.
