This course focuses on the early Middle Ages - a period of upheaval
and dramatic social change. Beginning with the Roman Empire's
collapse under the pressure of the Barbarian hoards, and concluding
with the eleventh-century reform of the church, we will examine how a
new civilization arose from the fusion of Roman, German, and Christian
traditions. Topics will include miracles and martyrdom, monasticism
and the preservation of culture, Charlemagne as Christian ruler,
gender and the Germans, the beginnings of feudalism, and the gradual
ascendance of the papacy. 1 midterm exam; 1 final; 2 short papers
(ca. 5pp).
