No previous knowledge of African history necessary. This introductory
course aims to give students a good understanding and knowledge of
African civilization. Topics include the environment; traditional
political, economic and social systems; history; music, art and
literature; Africa in the world. The basic text, Africa (P.Martin and
P. O'Meara, eds.) will be supplemented by novels and articles that
give an inside view of the continent. Three exams and short papers.
