Topic:  Gendering Premodern Europe

This course will address the impact of gender theory on medieval and
early modern historical analysis.  Different theoretical perspectives
will be assessed through Foucauldian, psychoanalytic, anthropological,
and "queer" approaches - to name a few.  Topics examined will include:
the construction of masculinity and femininity; the medieval body;
sexualities and sexual orientation; gender in the marketplace and
public life; spirituality and mysticism.  Active seminar
participation; research proposal and a research paper.
