This course serves as an introduction to major themes in modern
British history, from the Industrial Revolution to the First World
War. Students will lead discussions on readings set for the course,
write short critical essays on individual texts, and write a longer
essay exploring the treatment of some subject or theme (chosen by each
student in consultation with the instructor). Themes will include
industrialization, the emergence of class society, women and gender,
party politics, the growth of empire, and others.
