History | COLLOQ. IN RUSSIAN HISTORY

Topic: Russian Historiography from Karamzin to Present
A portion of the above section reserved for majors

This colloquium has two aims: (1) Because Soviet/Russia historiography
has changed drastically since Gorbachev's coming to power, it seems
important to review the changes before undertaking serious research;
(2) Because classic works by prominent Russian historians are not
systematically examined in most graduate colloquia, the need for a
course akin to "Great books in Russian history" has been keenly felt.
This offering covers both vital areas by examining the lives and works
of major historians, the concepts they used and their methodologies,
and the political environment in which they worked. It covers the
basic features of a vast subject, from Karamzin to the present
