Topic: Empire and Culture
A portion of the above section reserved for majors

During this course, graduate students will be expected to write an
original research paper on the theme of culture and empire based on
primary resources in the language of their expertise. Questions to be
considered include the role of imperialism in cultural production and
the role of culture in nation building, particularly within
multinational contexts. Before proceeding to independent research on
their papers, the class will meet to read and discuss some of the
seminal works on national and imperial culture in order to establish a
common methodological groundwork. Although the focus of the course
will be on the Russian Empire, many of the readings will be of a
general theoretical nature and students will be permitted to write on
other geographical regions.
