Living-learning Center | History of Recording Technology
L210 | 3141 | Jake Smith
This course will cover the history of recording technology from the
invention of the gramophone in 1877 to recent developments in digital
audio and distribution services like Napster. Our primary purposes
will be to examine the interaction between technological developments
and musical style and performance, the ways in which technologies
have changed the way people listen to music, and to investigate the
study of media technology in general. While our main focus will be on
music, there will also be units on film sound and radio. We’ll also
have some opportunities to do some practical creative projects
working with several different audio environments.
This course meets AHLA distribution requirements for COAS and is open
to all IU undergraduates.
