This course will examine the nexus between folklore and popular
culture through readings, lectures, discussions, in-class activities,
special events, and field research. Special emphasis will be placed
on field research and, using a public folklore perspective,
dissemination of the results of studentsí research to the general
public through the creation of a Website. We will begin by exploring
some of the basic concepts and methodologies. Then we will delve into
four topic units---murals and graffiti, body art, urban legends, and
folklore in movies. Three fieldtrips (two local and one to Chicago)
and three movie showings are scheduled in conjunction with these
