E616: Curriculum in Music. 3 cr., TR, 1.00-2.15P, M005. Sect. 8079

This seminar, led by Professor Estelle Jorgensen, has been re-designed
as a complement to E635: College Music Teaching. It is ideal for
graduate students who are interested in teaching music in studio or
classroom settings. Curriculum (pl., curricula) is a term used to
describe the subject matter and content of instruction, and its focus
is on what is taught and learned. Deciding what to teach is one of
the most crucial decisions that music teachers have to make,
particularly in today’s complex world. Students who have previously
taught either as AI’s or in the studio, or have taken College Music
Teaching or another music education course can especially benefit from
this course. We will examine some of the models that have been used
in the past to design programs of study, read some recent literature
about the particular challenges of our time in designing courses of
study in music, notice the impact of technology in shaping what can be
taught in music and how, examine some examples of music curricula, and
understand the practical process of how to implement new approaches to
teaching music. Our assignments will be practical projects that
relate the ideas we read about and discuss to the design and
implementation of a course of study in music of the student’s choice.
