This is the foundation course for students admitted to the doctoral
program in Clinical Science. Classic papers in the field are
reviewed. A conceptual framework is presented for the field of
Clinical Science. The intrinsic tensions between science and practice
are examined critically.
Format: Lectures are combined with class discussions of assigned
readings.
Text: No required text. Assigned readings from original sources.
Required papers, tests, and Grades: Three short "thought papers" are
assigned during the semester. There is one final exam at the end of
the semester; this essay covers all of the material from the semester.
Grades are based on the exam, the papers, and class participation.
