Religious Studies | Christianity to 1500
R531 | 3892 | Furey

This course studies the formation of Christendom in the east and the
west; the history of Christianity in the Byzantine empire; and western
Christianity in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Within the
framework of this comparative survey, we will examine issues of
religious versus secular authority; the sacred authority invested in
monks, visionary women, and saints; different ways of portraying and
worshipping Christ; and new religious movements. This course can be
seen as a sequel to R327/521, but there are no prerequisites. The
course will serve as a foundation for the study of Christianity in
later historical contexts, including the material covered in R331.
