Religious Studies | Survey of Afro-American Religious History
R600 | 3895 | Dixie

This colloquium traces the various African-American religious
traditions from the Middle Passage to the Civil Rights Movement. Over
the course of the semester we shall read widely from the secondary
literature on black religion, as well as explore the field's many
methodological approaches. The course is arranged so that students may
focus their reading on a particular theme or chronological period. In
addition to weekly readings, book reviews and occasional in-class
presentations, each student will prepare a bibliographical essay on
some aspect of the black religious experience.
