Sociology | Race and Ethnic Relations
S335 | 4027 | Virk

In this course, we will critically examine the diverse racial and
ethnic composition of our society. In light of the fact that ten
percent of the US population today is foreign-born, we will
investigate new cultural categories, and rethink accepted ones. How
are racial and ethnic identities constructed? What do these
identities mean to us? What is the significance of identity
politics? How is dialogue possible among us as diverse citizens of
society? This course will focus on issues relating to immigration,
community development, political empowerment, labor market status,
gender relations, and civil rights.
