Sociology | Research Methods in Sociology
S370 | 4036 | Shirley
S370 is the first in the Department of Sociology’s two-course
sequence in Methods and Statistics. This course provides a general
introduction to the sociological research process by addressing
issues surrounding research design, data collection, basic analysis
of data, and interpretation of results. We will cover a wide range
of methodological approaches used by sociologists, including surveys,
historical and archival techniques, experiments, content analysis,
intensive interviewing, and field work. During this course, students
will read materials describing and employing these methods; conduct
social research using several of the methods; and write reports on
consuming, conducting, and critiquing sociological research.
Course grades will be based on exams, small projects, and writing
assignments. Due to the compressed nature of this course, daily
attendance and participation in both class lecture and lab sessions
are mandatory and will be taken into account in determining the
course grade.
