Communication and Culture | Intro to Television Criticism
C312 | 1141 | Trevino

This course presents an introductory survey of the form, structure,
and meanings of television programs. Readings and assignments are
geared to interpreting the role television plays as a cultural force
in society. We will cover the historical development of specific
television genres and conventions (situation comedies, talk shows,
dramas, news programs, sports, game shows, soap operas, and music TV).
We will also survey major approaches to media criticism (genre
criticism, narrative theory, feminist criticism, semiotics,
ideological analysis, and British cultural studies) to familiarize
ourselves with the language and methodology to critically evaluate the
visual media. The emphasis of the course rests primarily with
television's role as a producer of meaning in American culture.
