aka: rkinsman@indiana.edu
Time: 1:00-2:15 TR
Place: JH A106
This course is based in media: magazines, television, and popular
films. In the widest scope, students will track representations of
class, race and gender through contemporary media. Readings will
introduce ideas on Self and Other, "buying in" and "selling out,"
commodities and talk-show fame. Students will engage topics as varied
as Jerry Springer, duct tape, South Park, rap magazines and punk rock
as the course moves from talk shows to commodity culture to tabloids.
Course requirements include journals, a group presentation, and three
papers. Several required screenings will be scheduled above and
beyond course meetings.
