This section provides an introduction to the study of popular culture
by focusing on the topic of food. Considering a variety of genres,
such as print and television advertising, magazine articles, the food
novel, the food film, the food memoir, the cooking show and the
cooking competition, we will explore and analyze how contemporary
American society thinks of itself with regards to both food and
eating. Among the phenomena we will discuss are: the rise of the
celebrity chef, the development of genetically-engineered vegetables
or “franken-food,” the rise in blended cuisines such as “Asian fusion”
or “Caribbean,” the scientific and medical study of food-related
illnesses, from food allergies, to eating disorders and overweight.
Assignments will include a midterm and final exam, two short essays,
and class presentations.
