This seminar will:  review the history of translation and its
importance to the development of literature and of civilization,
survey common practices in and approaches to, translation; examine
the theories and metatheories relating to translation;  and then
proceed to examine different aspects of translation as: canon-
formation, hermeneutics, heuristic, epistemology, mythology, poetics,
epistemology, generics, etc.  Sample translations cited from the
literature as well as those produced for the class will provide the
bases of exercises that will initiate the student to different modes
of critical analysis.

Students will be expected to prepare their own translations from at
least one foreign language as well as to write critiques of other
translations, including texts translated from a language they are not
familiar with.  Precis of the theoretical readings will be required,
along with a seminar paper, which is to be presented in three
different forms at three different junctures in the course:  a
proposal, a draft, and an oral presentation.
