G550 (Internship in Counseling) is designed to give students more
advanced experience and with a broader range of clients than provided
in the counseling practicum. The internship experience is at/or near
the end of the formal training period. The internship experience
requires 600 contact hours with two options (a) 20 hours per week
basis over a period of two consecutive semesters (b) 20 hours per week
for one semester followed or preceded by both the six week and the
eight week summer sessions. All prerequisite coursework will have been
completed. Objectives for this course are as follows:

1.To counsel a wide range of client problems using both individual and
group counseling as the mode of helping.

2.To further develop assessment skills for helping clients to define
their problem and set proper goals.

3.To develop sophistication in selecting appropriate interventions and
to assess the effects of a given intervention.

4.To do outreach and consultation work where appropriate.

5.To develop competencies for offering the services and programs
commonly offered by the agency or school where the internship is

6.To become socialized to the culture of the setting so to develop a
clearer understanding of the norms, values, priorities and processes
that occur in that setting.

7.Demonstrate knowledge of basic classification, indications, and
contraindications of commonly prescribed psychopharmacological
medications for the purpose of identifying effects of such

8.Exhibit ethical behavior interactions with clients and case

During the course if the internship, you are expected to:

1.Be on site 20 hours per week.

2.Attend monthly G550 class meetings throughout the entire internship
experience ready to discuss experiences, problems, growth and related
reading assignments.

3.Attend a monthly on campus seminar (G598) for one full semester
during your internship.

4.Meet individually with you immediate supervisor for a minimum of one
hour per week.

5.Keep a journal of the internship activities which includes:

a.The site where the internship is scheduled and the supervisor's
name. Include your schedule (dates and times at site).

b.The date and the topic of the individual supervision session
including any difficulties where greater attention is needed, as well
as patterns of growth and development.

c.A summary statement of the activity for each week.

d.An integrative summary of each month and semester experience with
each forwarded to the instructor one week before each monthly class

e.The summary should reflect activities that demonstrate
implementation of knowledge and skills developed in G562, School
Counseling: Intervention, Consultation and Program Development.

6.Review and sign the university evaluation form prepared by the
supervisor each semester.

7.Maintain an hourly log of site activities. The log must be signed
monthly by your site supervisor.

8.Contact the instructor for individual consultation as necessary.

Grading Criteria

1.Attendance and participation in monthly group supervision classes.

2.Demonstrate professional skills in the internship setting.

3.Attendance and participation in organized activities (e.g.,
staffing, training activities) at the internship site.

4.Compliance with required clinical forms and assessment.
