Our course will study Britain, the USA, and trans-Atlantic relations in the nineteenth century. We'll read some major figures from both sides of the water, including Poe, Melville, Mark Twain, Coleridge, Wordsworth, one of the Brontės, probably some Dickens. We will glance at Darwin and science. We'll also read excerpts from women and men travelers who visited Britain and the New World. We also plan to pay some attention to "English" and words as they traveled and changed. I assume students will write two short circa eight page papers and do a mid term and final exam.
