TOPIC: 20TH CENTURY BLACK POETICS
This course explores modern and contemporary African-American poetry in the context of black music, from blues to bebop to hip hop. While providing a solid overview and introduction to important poets from Langston Hughes to Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, Rita Dove, and Yusef Komunyakaa, the course also examines in depth certain schools like the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movement. Overall, we will explore how black oral and folk culture from dialect to gospel to blues influences poetry, while also examining music and poetry recordings to better understand the sound and song of African American poetry.
