English | Projects in Reading & Writing - Topic: FREAKS
W170 | 1946 | Michelle Ross

This analytical writing course will take as its topic of inquiry the
place of "freaks" in American culture. We will read essays and
literary texts, as well as examine films, television, advertisements,
cartoons, music videos, photography, visual art, performance art, and
the like. Using these materials we will consider how our culture
defines and represents freaks, what cultural values determine
enfreakment, economic and other motivations behind enfreakment, and
the dangers inherent in this construct. In addition, we will consider
too how these marginalized others reclaim freak identity, subvert it,
and use it toward empowerment and social change.
