PREREQUISITE: COMPLETION OF THE ENGLISH COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT. COLLEGE INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION.
This course is geared toward the active learner who wishes to gain knowledge and experience of environmental issues through reading a variety of types of nature writing and doing community service. The course requires students to volunteer at designated service agencies to perform meaningful work in the local community. Course readings will investigate how our views of the environment are constructed by inherited cultural perceptions and how the land has molded us and how we have shaped the land. Critical readings will frame questions about the idea of "nature" and perspectives on the American landscape. The writing component will involve keeping a journal, analysis of texts, and writing several short papers and one term paper. Students will keep a journal for recording responses to the readings, observation of nature, social reflection, and problem appraisal. These writings will provide the basis for a research paper.
