W383 | 2024 | Wojahn

2024 2:30p-3:45p TR (15) 3cr.

This W383 will focus upon the study of poetic form--traditional
meters and forms, as well as the prosody of free verse. Students
will be expected to compose weekly exercises in a number of received
forms and meters, among them the sonnet, the villanelle, the sestina,
the pantoum, the ballad, blank verse, syllabic verse, etc. Exercises
in free verse and in forms such as the prose poem will also be
assigned. These exercises will be discussed in workshops, and
students will also be asked to make a short class presentation on the
work of a poet or on an aspect of prosody. Revisions of work will be
included in a portfolio to be turned in at the end of the semester.

This section is designed for students who have already taken W303 or
W403. Other students wishing permission to enroll will need to first
submit a portfolio of ten pages of poetry, along with a description
of any previous coursework done in creative writing. Portfolios need
to be placed in my mailbox in Ballantine 442 by April 1, 2002.
