This course surveys painting, sculpture, and architecture in
Europe and America from the late 14th century to the present.
The emphasis is twofold: 1) recognizing the visual
characteristics of period styles through a study of individual
works by major artists and architects, and 2) utilizing works of
art to better understand the social, cultural, and economic
realities of various historical eras. The format is 2 lectures
and 1 discussion section per week. Discussion groups will
emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and there will be museum
visits and campus walks as appropriate.
Grades are based on performance/improvement on exams and in
discussion sections, attitude, and attendance.
