This course surveys the principal artists and movements in
19th century European art.  Among the topics that will be
discussed are the following: the rise of romanticism, social
observers, painting out-of-doors, Manet's Paris, realism and
aestheticism, domestic and erotic interiors, expressionist and
symbolist tendencies, and revolutionary portraiture.  Students
will be assigned three short papers, and there will be a midterm
and (non-comprehensive) final exam.
