This course examines rap music as an artistic and sociological
phenomena with emphasis on its social and cultural contexts.
Discussion will include the co-existence of various rap styles, their
appropriation by the music industry, and controversies resulting from
the exploitation of hard core rap as a commodity for national and
global consumption.

Fulfills a COAS Arts and Humanities, Traditions and Ideas
distribution requirement and is on List A of the COAS Culture Studies
requirement.
