French and Italian | Topics in the Learning & Teaching of French
F673 | 9279 | Prof. Laurent Dekydtspotter

This course surveys the major issues in the learning and teaching of
French. We will first explore research on L2 French bearing on central
mental issues arising in second language acquisition: initial state,
epistemological limits, how grammatical changes are made. We will then
address performance systems: second language processing and
pragmatic knowledge. Then, we will consider implications for current
approaches to teaching. The methodological focus will be on
experimental design for quantitative study. The pedagogical component
of the course will address replications of published studies in the
acquisition of phonological and grammatical features of French by
American learners. The focus will be on methodological issues in
second language acquisition research bearing in direct applications of
research findings. These issues will be discussed by A. Valdman.
