Cross-Cultural Gender Formations investigates and compares gender
patterns and dynamics within a sampling of cultures from around the
world. The course critically scrutinizes different analyses of
women's oppression in these various cultures and social systems.
Themes addressed may include: the international division of labor;
gendered features of caste and class systems; body rituals and
clothing marking masculinity and femininity; religion and gender in
non-western cultures; warfare and gender issues; gendered practices
and rhetoric within nationalist, de-colonizing and anti-western
struggles; and gender and globalization.
