C400 Catalan Language and Culture (3 credits) ELECTIVE
The course may be taken for both undergraduate and graduate credit.

C400 is an introductory course. No previous knowledge of Catalan is
expected, but students should be proficient in another Romance
language. The aim of the course is to teach the basics of Catalan
grammar from a practical point of view, but emphasizing reading. A
component of the course is an overview of some of the specifics of the
present-day Catalan cultural scene (the political situation,
socio-linguistic issues, contemporary literature).

Note 1: Undergraduate students who matriculated to IU in Fall 2000 or
after may use C400 to fulfill the 300/400 level elective for the
Spanish Major.

Note 2: IU graduate students can fulfill one of their second-language
requirements by taking 2 Catalan courses. This may be done by taking
C400 this Fall and C450, a survey of Modern Catalan Literature, in the
Spring of 2003. Some graduate credit can be earned at IU with
400-level courses; you may consult the Director of Graduate Studies in
the Department.
