P412 Brazil: The Cultural Context (3 credits) CULTURE
Special Topic: The Theorization and Experience of Race in Brazil in
the XXth Century
In this course we will chart some of the changes the concepts of race
and race relations have undergone in Brazil in the XXth century. Our
point of departure will be Gilberto Freyre's groundbreaking 1933
study, The Masters and the Slaves. We will consider the importance of
Freyre's ideas, the multiple responses it generated over decades, and
then move into newer trends in the theorization of race in Brazil. Our
approach will be interdisciplinary, and will incorporate historical,
sociological, anthropological, political and literary texts.
Students will write several short response papers, develop a class
presentation, and write a final paper.
NOTE: Cross-listed with L402. Taught in English.
