Poetry in Portuguese
A survey of Portuguese, Brazilian and African poetry, from
the sixteenth to
the late twentieth century. We will pay particular attention to the
oscillations between lyrical introspection and politically committed
poetry, and consider the various formal, social and cultural
implications and consequences of these oscillations. We will also
examine the dialogue between the various national poetic traditions.
Students will keep a journal and write a final paper (15-20
pgs). There will also be one exam.
