S332 The Hispanic World II (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S331, or S333, or equivalent
The goal of this course is introduce the students to the study of
Spanish literature through the analysis and discussion of different
Spanish literary works, in the three major literary genres (drama,
narrative, and poetry), and throughout almost all the chronological
span of Spanish literature. The thread uniting all the selected works
is that we will study texts in which one of the main Spanish literary
myths is created and/or developed. That myth is Celestina: we will
begin with XV-Century Fernando de Rojas's TRAGICOMEDIA DE
CALISTO Y MELIBEA (we will read excerpts of the text) and we will end
with XX-Century texts, like Jorge Guillén's "Huerto de Melibea", and
Alfonso Sastre's TRAGEDIA FANTASTICA DE LA GITANA CELESTINA (among
others); with some intermediate stops along the development of this
literary myth. We will dedicate attention too to cinematographic and
musical versions of CELESTINA.
Course evaluation will be strongly based on active class participation
and discussion about daily reading assignments; in addition, there
will be three writing assignments and a final exam.
The course —including class discussions and assignments— will be
conducted in Spanish.
Credit given for only two of the following: S331, S332, S333.
