This course is for majors who are doing Honors in Spanish.  This S498,
section 4362 meets with S418, Hispanic Drama.  If you are leaning
toward literature for your background on your honors thesis, you may
want to consider taking this S498 course.  THIS COURSE MEETS JOINTLY
WITH S418, section #4354.

S418 Hispanic Drama    (3 credits)      LITERATURE
Prerequisite: Must have completed two of the following: S331, S332,
S333

This course offers an introduction to Hispanic drama from the early
modern age to the present, with texts from both sides of the Atlantic.
The focus of the class discussion will be the individual's response to
a number of societal institutions:  legal authority, the honor code,
marriage, etc.   Special  attention will be devoted to the unique
nature of the theater and to its evolution in both Spain and Spanish
America.  Texts include Lope de Vega's LA DAMA BOBA, Calderón de la
Barca's LA VIDA ES SUENO, Moratín's EL SI DE LAS NINAS, Zorrilla's
DON JUAN TENORIO, García Lorca's LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA, Buero
Vallejo's EL TRAGALUZ, Usigli's CORONA DE SOMBRA, and a number of
one-act plays from Spanish America.  In addition to doing the assigned
readings and participating in class discussions, students will have
several short writing assignments, work in the areas of staging and
performance, and take midterm and final exams.
