U.S. Latino Literature

This course will be conducted in the manner of a seminar,
with a lecture/discussion format to help us reflect on the primary
texts as well as respond to the critical articles selected. This, to
help us properly frame the materials assigned.

Special emphasis will be given to treating the emerging Post-
Nationalist Consciousness and its Dialogue with English-speaking
society. Topics such as Interlingual Culture, Post-Nationalism, Post-
Feminist Latina Culture, and the Latino Diaspora will be borne in
mind as we read and discuss the selections for our course.

Selections from Julia Alvarez, Richard Rodríguez, Pedro Juan
Soto, Rosario Ferré, Tomás Rivera, Oscar Hijuelos, Sandra Cisneros,
Luis Valdez are some of the writings we wish to consider. Thus,
poetry, prose narrative and theater will all enter our discursive
domain.

The class will be expected to write a few mini-essays on the
material read, as well as prepare a short paper of 4-5 pages and a
longer one of 10-12 pages for the course.
