History of the Spanish Language

Prerequisite: fulfillment of the departmental Latin requirement (L300
or equivalent).  This course is required for Ph.D. students in
Spanish Literature.

The course will examine the origin and development of Spanish in the
Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and elsewhere, seen in historical
and cultural contexts.  Two textbooks (Rafael Lapesa, "Historia de la
lengua española", and Christopher J. Pountain, "A History of the
Spanish Language Through Texts") will be supplemented by a packet of
readings and exercises.  Principal topics will be the history of
sounds, grammatical forms and structures, and words; major dialects;
and the evolution of prose style. There will be two midterm
examinations and a final paper/project.
