This course will present an examination of Jewish history under
Muslim rule from the beginnings of Islam in the 7th century CE
through the present.   Topics include the legal status of Jews in
Islamic law, comparing it to the Jewish status under Christianity;
Jews in the social, economic and political order of medieval Islam-
between tolerance and conflict; the “golden age” in medieval Muslim
Spain; mutual cultural
influences between Judaism and Islam; the Jews in the Ottoman Empire;
the modernization of the Jewish communities in the Muslim world;
Zionism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Jews in Muslim lands; and
the Jews of modern Egypt and modern Turkey.
