Our semester's work will entail a series of experiments designed to
parallel, to some extent, the content of its companion lecture course
(Chemistry S105). Experiments will be carried out on the following
topics: a) gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, b) redox
determination of iron in an iron ore, c) spectrophotometric analysis
of a mixture of chromium (III) and cobalt (II), d) thermochemistry of
the neutralization of strong acids with a strong base, e)
investigation of the formation and energy of hydrogen bonds in
carboxylic acid dimers, f) determination of hypochlorite in bleach,
and g) qualitative analysis.
