Prereq: Linguistics L541 or comparable background on phonetic
transcription and acoustics of speech.
This course will survey the research literature on various issues in
phonetics and phonology with special attention to the acoustic and
articulatory basis for phonetic features. Issues such as place of
articulation, voicing, nasals, vowel contrasts, the r/l problem,
phonetic acquisition and speech timing will be addressed - although
specific student interests can influence content. Students will
report in class on research papers they have read and will conduct an
original experiment in small teams.
