Latin American Studies | Latin American Politics
L426 | 3104 | Seligson, Amber

This is an introductory course to the politics of Latin America. The
course considers alternative theoretical explanations for patterns of
politics, analyzes the role of major political actors in shaping
domestic politics, and reviews contemporary political trends. The
course will consider questions such as: What is the relationship
between a country's social and economic conditions and its political
system? Why have so many Latin American nations alternated between
democratic and authoritarian regimes? How have relations with
industrialized nations-especially the U.S.-affected the political
systems of Latin American countries?
