Political Science | American Political Controversies
Y100 | 3740 | Alex-Assensoh

This course examines the role and political consequences of race in
American politics from the founding of our nation to the present. In
addition to critically examining and analyzing the meaning and social
construction of race, the class will focus on public policies that
have been formulated primarily on the basis of race. The course will
also challenge students to assess and think critically about race-
based public policies, political participation strategies and
reactions to the same. Students will be encouraged to actively
participate in the learning process by critically reading and writing
about the foregoing issues. Additionally, the course will include
independent research projects, discussion sessions and a video
series. Grades will be based upon writing assignments, class
participation and two in-class examinations.
