A154 | 9715 | Matthew Guterl

This is an introductory course on the experiences of people of
African descent in the Diaspora. It will explore the development of
racism and racial ideologies in the United States, the Caribbean,
Latin America, and South Africa from colonial times to the present.
The course emphasis will be on the interaction between cultural,
political and economic factors in shaping patterns of conflict and
collaboration, domination and resistance. The course is divided into
five sections, and culminates in the comparison of two memoirs, one
of segregation in the United States and the other of apartheid in
South Africa.
