Anthropology | STORIES & STEREOTYPES: DISCOURSES OF DIFFERENCE
E400 | 0424 | Stoeltje

ABOVE SECTION OFFERED FOR INTENSIVE WRITING

This course focuses on forms of informal communication such as narratives,
jokes, music and film, for example, as the means by which attitudes,
values, prejudices are transmitted through society. Using examples from
the internet, sports, parties, newspapers, and movies, as well as other
sources, we will attempt to understand the ways in which ideas about
difference and sameness develop and diffuse to others.

Students will write papers that total 5000 words. Some will be responses
to readings or videos while others will be observations drawn from social
life.

A final research paper based on ethnographic principles will be due at the
end of the semester. There are no exams, only papers.
